In 1920, the young potter Shoji Hamada and the British potter Bernard Leach went to St Ives – a port town in southwestern UK, and built a kiln there. Based on the history of their relationship, Mashiko Town initiated the Mashiko Museum Residency Program. For the year 2020 – the Centenary of the Leach Pottery, we planned “Leach Pottery Apprenticeship Program” for Mashiko emerging potters and “Artist in Residence in Mashiko” for a potter currently working at the Leach studio. After two years of postponement due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we could realize these potters exchange between Mashiko and the Leach Pottery.
